Last weekend I updated the Brazilian Portuguese dictionary for GNU Aspell, and the Portuguese (European and Brazilian) dictionary for Vim. This version features a much improved accuracy while spell checking words with enclisis an mesoclisis.

I just improved Vim’s syntax highlighting for po files. Besides the features introduced last year, this version is now able to correctly highlight XML tags beginning in one line and ending in the next one. Vim will now spell check the value of specific attributes: abbr, alt, content, summary, standby e title. (This list was retrieved from the translate-toolkit source code.)

Dwayne Bailey released the day before yesterday the new version of the gettext message catalog syntax highlight for Vim. This new version restricts the spell checking to the translated messages, i. e., the new script stops Vim from marking the rest of the PO file as incorrect (original messages, msgid and msgstr etc.). Now it’s worth paying attention when Vim says the word is misspelled!

As a sequence of my february update (in Portuguese), I announce the new version of the Brazilian Portuguese dictionary for GNU Aspell 0.6 and Vim 7.

This update brings the improvements from BrOffice.org’s 2.2 Spell Checker (in Portuguese): umlaut requirement when appropriate, corrections in verb conjugation, even more word inclusions, and affix rules alterations. Raimundo Moura is already working on a new version, which should benefit from the hyphen to validate enclisis such as “conjugá-la-ia” (Portuguese for “I would conjugate it”). I’m waiting anxiously!

AbiWord already does grammar checking, but only in English and with a certain dependency. Brazilian Gabriel Bakiewicz, one of the authors of the first version of CoGrOO, is participating on a Google Summer of Code project to enable AbiWord to use any grammar checker. The project is oriented by Dom Lachowicz, AbiWord and enchant (see the nome origin) developer. If everything goes well, we could have a grammar checking library, available for any program, and capable of using any backend (CoGroOO, Link Grammar Parser, etc.).

I always knew the enchant library took its name from spell, but only today I discovered its name is also related to the wizard:

“Enchant”’s English definition is roughly “to cast a spell” — whose meaning seemed to fit in well with a spelling-oriented framework. Add to that the fact that I wrote most of this this on a lonely Sunday morning while my gf was engrossed with “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”, and you can see where I got its name
